Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 others sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated gas explosion at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The explosion was triggered as police and firefighters entered the residence near the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three victims who died served in the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the site and another man who fled following the blast was located soon after. Each of them have been admitted to the hospital.

The detonation could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the area displayed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the past.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the property was subject to an eviction order due to financial obligations accrued by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the house. When the officers reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the residents triggered the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno informed reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the site, the Interior Minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the blast consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of national police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor believed the explosion had occurred on a level above the access point and stated to journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the blast, he said personnel had “detected a whistling noise, likely the propane tanks being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors informed reporters, adding that the trio had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had died in the performance of their duties.
