Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is exiting the board at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a collection of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became public.
The economist remarked in a statement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have contributed, optimistic about the potential of the enterprise, and anticipate following their development".
The prominent academic, who previously led the prestigious university, announced on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public communications showed that the economist exchanged messages with the financier until the day before Epstein's 2019 detention for accused sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company expressed it respected the economist's decision to depart.
"We acknowledge his many contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the governing body," the company remarked.
Congressional Action
This announcement follows after the entire Congress of the US legislature decided on this week to endorse a legislation that would compel the US justice department to make public its records on the case.
The bill will then proceed to the office of President Trump for signature. He has indicated he intends to endorse the bill, after reversing his view on the issue following objections from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-connected emails made public by the legislative panel days ago included multiple prominent individuals in the financier's past associates, without suggesting any criminal activity by those individuals.
The emails indicated that Summers and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often seeking to introduce the academic to influential global figures.
Individual Statement
After the messages were made available with the wider community, Summers said he assumed "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to persist in communicating with the financier".
He added that he wanted "to rebuild trust and repair bonds with the persons nearest to me".
Career Background
The professor held leadership roles under Democratic administrations; acting as economic leader under the former president, and as director of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He presided over the university from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a faculty member there. When declaring his withdrawal from public commitments earlier on this week, he said he would continue his academic responsibilities.
Further Repercussions
Following his announcement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a left-leaning think tank in Washington where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that the economist was no longer affiliated with the organization.
He became part of the board of the AI company, which develops ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a defeated move to replace its CEO the company leader.
