Prepare yourself, as every year since 1999, Pantone announces a Color of the Year. This selection is a reflection of the zeitgeist—informing everything from our emotions and what we wear to how we design our living spaces. The latest announcement, though, is somewhat unexpected. It is "a billowy white," which Pantone calls a "billowy, balanced white."

Laurie Pressman, VP of the Pantone Color Institute, commented that it is "a key structural color … permitting all colors to shine."

Hmm, Cloud Dancer… hold on, just white? Is this a prank? Does white qualify as a proper color?

How does one define the color of clouds? Fresh snow? While people often think of white as a color, all color is essentially a range of visible light. You can find it in a set of colored pencils, so I'd argue the answer is yes.

Whether Pantone is out of touch is harder to determine. They claim, Cloud Dancer combines easily with other colors, provides a calm backdrop, makes a minimalist statement, and projects subtle elegance.

Feedback online, however, has been less complimentary. Some commentators have accused Pantone of being completely "tone-deaf." Fashion and trend forecaster Mandy Lee labeled it "a let-down." Critics have compared it with coded promotion of certain ideologies seen in popular culture.

I see, it's to be hoped they're happily ignorant that this isn't the best moment to be pointedly celebrating pure white... Therefore, how might someone not exactly adjacent to a catwalk apply this information in daily life? I recently coated my kitchen ceiling white, does that qualify?
