Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such treatments must be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections explains the amplified regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
